A. The Oregon Brewers Guild is a trade organization formed in July of 1992 to promote craft beer brewed in Oregon. We provide information to a thirsty public about Oregon craft beers. We provide a point of contact between the brewers themselves, our suppliers, retailers and customers. We are also advocates for more progressive beer laws.
Q. Who is in the Guild?
A. The Guild is made up of commercial craft brewers and their supplierrs. The group is diverse ranging from dozens of brewpubs to larger regional craft brewers. We are currently adding Retail Members, pubs, restaurants and package stores that sell native Oregon beer.
Q. What is the criteria for being a member of the Oregon Brewers Guild?
A. To be a Brewing Member, you have to own a microbrewery in Oregon that owns their own facilities . Contract brewers are excluded from being members.
We have Associate Members that include suppliers of services, equipment, malts, hops to Oregon’s breweries. Distributors, exporters and other professional services that want to do more business with the Oregon brewers are encouraged to join.
Retail Memberships are open to bars, restaurants and retail stores that offer craft beers to their customers.
Soon, we will open up membership to Enthusiast Members as well. You just have to love great beer to be an Enthusiast.
Q. Why did this happen in Oregon?
A. People were ready and willing to experiment with flavors.
The pioneering spirit of several brewers and a receptive public were the start. People wanted more flavor in their beer. Blond beers had lost their sparkle. Oregon brewers, as well as those across the nation, were experimenting with many different styles of beers. Soon there were fruity ambers, dark porters, a cloudy wheat and a dozen other beer types being made. People in the Northwest just snapped them up.
Q. How can people get the Guild 's 30 page booklet listing your microbreweries?
A. Send a check for $3.00, in US Funds, to the Oregon Brewers Guild

It is held at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland the last week end in July each year. The year 2002 festival will be July 26, 27, 289. Admission is free, though the festival cup will cost you a few dollars and there is a small per cup tasting fee.
The hotline number is (503) 778-5917 for additional information.
There is also an Oregon Brewers Guild dinner which precedes the festival itself. It will be on Thursday, July 25th, 2002. Tickets for $35 are available in May.
